piranesi interior
Hi All,
I am joining the competition late, now with a bit of free time finally. I've decided to do a piece inspired by Piranesi's Carceri d'invenzione, his famous prison etchings. Rather than do a faithful recreation of one of his scenes, I'm going to design a sort of industrial cyber-punk version of a vast Piranesi-esque space, with an emphasis on chiaroscuro light and contrast, complex and disorienting perspectival effects, and lots of mechanical technology on display.
Here are some original Piranesi etchings, and my first very rough concept sketch. Will move onto modeling the rough space in 3d and post that soon.
Your comments and feedback are appreciated, thanks!

In the Manor of Piranesi
Hi All,
Here is the progress I've made so far with my model... there is a base massing model that I began with, and my detailed model at about 50% completion. Will try to get it done over the weekend and post results.

Here is my model as a basic render, an AO pass, and a quick color test through matte painting over the base render. The geometry is more or less complete, I worked on making the scene more clear as a vast interior, with some daylight up at the top and dark moody light below. I will move on to cg texuring and ligthing next, but keeping things pretty basic. After that I plan on doing a full matte painting pass, so dirt, grundge, smoke, atmosphere, and certain lighting effects will all be done as 2d paint.
Let me know what you think, thanks.

texturing, lighting progress
Here is my scene with simple texturing and lighting, as well as a quick preview of the raw render composite. A few more tweaks and then on to post and painting.

post and matte paint
Here is my image with about 90% of the post work done; going to add more random lights and noise in the distance and here and there. I'm also thinking of adding some human figures, as Piranesi often did in his etchings... if so, something subtle, mostly sillouhetted.
The original file is 4k in height, will probably need to downsize for the final.

Evermotion Competition 2010 Final Entry David Huang
Here are my final images: full composition, close-up of lower part and close-up of upper part. I added some people in the scene and updated the the foreground interior cell with a mysterious mechanism. I might have the grungiest and dirtiest interior in the competition, but I really enjoyed working on this project, taking it from concept design to final image. I tried to focus on design of the space, composition, layout, atmosphere and mood, while trying to interpret Piranesi's prison interiors in an original way. I really enjoyed participating in this fun competition.
Software used included 3ds Max 2009 for 3d, Vray 1.5 for materials, lighting, camera, and rendering, and Photoshop CS4 for post processing and 2d painting. All textures are from cgtextures.com and customized for tiling, dirt, etc. Scale figures were sourced from flickr.com
I'm submitting early as I will be out of town next week. The work I've seen elsewhere on the forum is really inspiring, good luck to all!
