WOpen the file global_start which should look like this.

DOWNLOAD START SCENE

Press F10 - make sure you`ve selected mental ray as the current renderer.

Turn on GI and render - our scene should look like on pic

render time 23 s

Now you should set brightness level of our scene, so change Energy value to 100000 and then render.
render time 23 s

Now open Indirect Illumination panel and in Global Light Properties rollout set its GI Photons to 1000000
Do the same with all parameters marked on our illustration.
Photons calculation - 1min and 20 sec

Select radius in both Global Illumination and Photons rollout. You should also save photon map to earn some time in next steps.
Render time - 1m – hmm.. too much noise...

Change search radius to 0.2 as we marked on our illustration and turn on "load photon map", so mental ray will use photon map created at previous step.
Render time - only 44 sec (because Photon Map isn`t calculated anymore). It looks terrible, but we`ll change that.

Now it`s time for Final Gathering. Set everything as illustration shows. Turn on Use File and choose a name for FG Map file.
Render time - 3 min 15 s - Our scene looks good.

Change radius values on FG rollout. Turn on Preview (no calculation).
Render time - only 55 sec (since FG Map is saved mental ray won`t calculate neither FG nor GI).

Turn off "acceleration" and render to see the real time of rendering!
Render time 8 min.

In this last step change Sampling Values as shown and use your saved photon map file.
Yeah, now it`s an eye candy ;)
